Market Gardeners - David & Shona Crawford
Region:
Melbourne
Markets:
Caulfield Farmers' Market, Kingston Farmers' Market, Seaford Farmers' Market, Whitehorse Farmers' Market

We are third generation growers – Our Grandfather George Crawford from Forth Tasmainia was a grower of mainly spuds and peas, supplying the canneries in Tassie - (he lived to 100.5 years old).

His son Bill Crawford crossed the seas to Victoria at the age of 17, he worked for other growers until he earnt enough to buy his own property and commenced growing himself in the early 1960’s (my father-in-law Bill is now in his 80’s). He and his wife Winifred have 8 children and over the years all the kids from very young ages worked on the farm (not by choice). The two eldest sons David and Stephen are third generation growers – which brings us to the present.

We have 2 farms, 100 acres at Five Ways near Tooradin and 11 acres at Pearcedale near Langwarrin. One farm grows the larger items such as Cauliflower, potatoes and cabbage etc. The other farm has the smaller bunched items such as Dutch Carrots, Silverbeet, and herbs etc.

We sell wholesale at the Melbourne Wholesale markets and three of us girls (women now), and also a niece specialise in doing various markets and Farmers’ markets around Melbourne.
We use minimum sprays hence we have worms and frogs in our market gardens, which is an indicator of having a healthy balance with nature. One farm uses recycled water, the other has a fairly large dam – so for the moment we are coping OK with the drought, but we of course need rain.

We are all very passionate about the quality of our produce – and believe we have extensive knowledge, as we all still work in the market garden in various ways and roles.
